OFHS Cheerleader Signs Letter of Intent to Head to Purdue
Congratulations to Oak Forest High School Senior Iryna Topchyi who signed a letter of intent to cheer for the Purdue Boilermakers, supported by her parents, Oksana Topchyi and Gary Kuckie of Oak Forest. She joins a spirit squad at their best and most competitive, as the Boilermaker Division I Co-ed team was the 2018 Champion team this year and the Boilermakers had a US All-Girl National Team representing the U.S., which brought home the silver. According to Topchyi, all cheerleaders cheer for the football team and then are assigned games to cheer for basketball and girls’ and boys’ volleyball games.
While she is at Purdue, Topchyi plans to study Linguistics and perhaps pursue a Business major or minor. She will have to work hard at this while training under acclaimed cheer coach Steve Solberg, who sets a very high bar of success. Topchyi started going to summer clinics as a young high school cheerleader and the coaching staff became familiar with her as a result.
Topchyi starts training for the cheer team right after she graduates from OFHS, and continues sporadically throughout the summer. Her official camp training will be at the Wisconsin Dells in July and in August she will start cheering at football games. Oak Forest HS Cheer Team Coach Christine DiVenti is elated that Topchyi has signed on to the Purdue team. She said, “We will most definitely be making our way to Purdue to see you cheering at a game!”
